Our Story

"You found an empty seat sitting next to me, and I asked your name"

Our story begins in the fall of 2018 with a little game called “wallyball”—a volleyball variation that uses walls as boundaries. We both had just gotten out of serious relationships earlier that year—his of 8 years, hers of 1.5 years (which was A LONG TIME for her!)—so the last thing we wanted to do was, well, get into another relationship. We both joined a wallyball league on different teams for different reasons: Ryan, who just discovered the sport through his sister Megan, joined as he had found a new passion, and Caroline joined because it was, well, volleyball with walls. But there was one similarity in our thinking: we wanted to meet new people. Unbeknownst to Caroline, Ryan was watching (and admiring) her play every week during league while trying to find the right opportunity to talk to her. He finally got the chance one day during a league group dinner. Caroline socialized with her friends, and Ryan was running late to dinner. As one of Caroline’s friends’ left the group, Ryan was walking in with his dad. The only empty seat just happened to be the seat next to Caroline. At this point, we would like to say the rest was history, but this story wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for Ryan’s dad “talking him up" to Caroline. She lost count of the amount of times he asked if she "thought [his] son was cute.” Ryan, embarrassed from the whole incident, eventually mustered up the courage to message Caroline and apologize for his father’s actions, to which Caroline laughed. She told Ryan that what his father did for him was sweet. Eventually we decided to meet up outside of league. Our first “date” was a miscommunication: Caroline thought it was a business lunch since all they talked about work and food. Somehow it led to meeting up on Black Friday for brunch, our actual "first-date-that-wasn't-supposed-to-be-a-first-date-but-eventually-turned-into-our-first-date," where we spent the whole day exploring downtown Detroit and Ferndale, eventually leading up to our very first kiss. From then on came a multitude of adventures, ranging from road trips to states we knew nothing about, international travel into the Amazon Rainforest (His idea. Caroline knew better), multiple beer festivals and music festivals, ski trips, fine dining experiences, playing in volleyball tournaments together, watching volleyball games, hosting wine/beer tastings, buying a house together, and our biggest one: creating Peanut Butter + Bacon, our food and travel blog. Our individual passions became each other’s passions, with Caroline cheering (and sometimes playing) at Ryan’s softball games, and Ryan watching Caroline’s orchestra performances. Our relationship didn’t come without struggles, which included a job switch for both of us at the same time. But the biggest trial was navigating through the COVID pandemic: How do you go on adventures, the basis of our relationship, without going out? We made it somehow, as Ryan proposed on our 2nd anniversary…while Caroline was sick on the couch with COVID, of course. And now here we are, planning the rest of our lives together.

Peanut Butter + Bacon - A Food and Travel Blog

We have so many common interests and passions, but one of the biggest things that brought us together was our passion for food and travel. In the middle of one of our adventures, we talked about how we wanted to share our passion for food and travel to the world. And so, we started Peanut Butter + Bacon. In 3 short years, it has evolved into a voice for our local food scene--a way to promote local chefs and cuisine unknown to most. Our story starts at Table 6 in a strip mall noodle joint in Madison Heights, Michigan. If all goes as planned, it ends well into the future in a hammock on the ocean beach. We are two Detroit-based foodies on a mission to explore cuisine from around the world while still enjoying our simple roots. This is the story of our passion for food and adventure. Peanut Butter + Bacon: It’s unconventional, but it works well together. Just like us…
