The Proposal

Barcelona, Spain

My plan was to propose on the 2nd day of the trip at the Parc del Laberint d'Horta, which is the oldest park in Barcelona. Located on the former estate of a wealthy Catalan family, it is famously known for its labyrinth maze in the center, and, located in the center of the maze, is the statue of the god of love, Eros. That was the plan ... here's how it actually went. One thing that I didn't account for, because I had no idea, is the fact that the date of the proposal, Oct. 12, is the NATIONAL DAY OF SPAIN. What do you do with your family when you're off work and school for the National Day of Spain? I guess you go to the park I was planning to propose at so your grandma and little kids could be part of the experience. I realized something was wrong when there was a 30 minute wait to enter the park. I'm starting to sweat here. We approach the entrance of the maze. Me - "April Liz, want to go through this labyrinth maze? Her - "Eh, I guess." Great start. We approach the statue. Moment of truth. What do we find? Two kids screaming bloody murder as they run from their parents. Needless to say, that's not where I proposed. But I needed to improvise. I had about an hour to get it done. This would provide ample time to get April Liz back to the hotel and get ready for engagement pictures I had set up. And you kind of need to be engaged to take engagement pictures. So, my window of time was closing, and I was feeling the heat. What was the answer? Open a bottle of wine. Wine will solve this problem. Exiting the maze, we found a private and serene cove that was covered in ivy. It was insulated from the noise, and, while sipping our wine, we realized it was the first time during our trip that we had the chance to sit down and simply take it in. The moment was right, and the rest is history. Afterwards, we took our pictures in Parc de la Ciutadella and spent the rest of the evening celebrating around the Gothic Quarter.
