We matched on a dating app (actually the second time, but Ruby ignored Kevin on the first match) in the spring of 2021 as Ruby was finishing her residency and Kevin was finishing his MBA. After some fun dates at the beach and hiking in Griffith Park, we both realized we had very similar values and goals and that there could be something special with us. We spent that summer meeting each other's friends, attending each other's graduations, and slowly intertwining our lives.
After multiple trips, meeting each other's family, and a few "how do you know?" conversations, we shopped for a ring together. Ruby was able to pick the ring design, and then it was up to Kevin to ask the question. Before going to visit Kevin's extended family in Taiwan, Kevin asked Ruby to a hike behind Griffith Observatory, mirroring one of our first dates. As we got to a small spot with a view where we have taken pictures in the past, with the sun setting to the west, Kevin got down on one knee and asked Ruby to spend the rest of our lives together.
On our first trip to Hawaii together, Kevin, who is an experienced swimmer, booked us a snorkeling trip with dolphins and sea turtles. Ruby on the other hand has never snorkeled or swam in open water. The waters were choppy and Ruby's life vest was poorly inflated so Ruby thought she was going to die as she began to sink a little. Luckily Kevin came to the rescue and we still managed to see some sea turtles and dolphins. A few days later, after some adventures where Ruby didn't struggle as much, we enjoyed a nice sunset on Waikiki beach. In the moment, we were grateful for each other and expressed our love for the first time.
