You can never be sure when a single decision, however small or seemingly temporary, might change the course of your life - and someone else’s. That’s exactly what happened when Ruby decided to travel to Madrid to teach English. We first met virtually in December of 2021. As petty misfortune would have it, we both tested positive for COVID-19, just days apart. Although we were unable to meet in person, it didn’t stop us from eagerly getting to know each other, texting all day from the confines of our Madrid homes. From behind a screen, we wished each other our first Merry Christmas and our first Happy New Year. Little did we know that we would go on to spend the rest of our lives sharing in these important moments together. Through our years of individual exploring, we were both well acquainted with Madrid’s irresistible charm. But as we began to explore together, the magic the city had to offer took on a whole new meaning. It wasn’t just Madrid; it was Madrid, together. Felix’s favorite speakeasy bar, Harvey’s, became our first date spot. Ruby’s favorite corners of Retiro became picnic locations and watercoloring dates. As we fell in love with the city anew, we fell joyfully in love with each other. All too soon, Ruby’s time in Madrid came to an end and her journey took her back stateside. Coffee shop hangs became Discord calls, virtual cooking dates, and binge-watching TV shows. Over the course of our 3 years of long distance, we were intentional in organizing regular visits to and from our home bases, during which time we met each others’ wonderful families and friends. We’ve been fortunate to travel to all corners of the U.S. and beyond. From New York City (where we went Way Down to Hadestown), to Orlando, Atlanta, Budapest, Italy, and of course, Kentucky and Spain. This is it. We have found in each other the perfect recipient of the love we’ve always wanted to give. We’ve found the perfect partner to go on the adventures our hearts yearn for. We have found the best friend we want to grow old and gray with.
