A Housewarming Party

Fate (and drunken subway singing) brought us together

On an unusually auspicious night at the end of January 2016, my best friend and I got invited by a complete stranger to a housewarming party on a subway ride home from a bar. He was a photographer (apparently for Alicia Keys), and we were drunkenly singing to the small crowd of unsuspecting commuters on their way home for the night. He asked if he could take our picture and then told us he had recently moved into the neighborhood, was hosting a housewarming party, and that we should come. I know what you're thinking: "Who would you go to a complete strangers housewarming party?" Well the short answer is: we would. At the time I was newly single and not exactly ready to mingle, but with a bit of persuasion (and after a margarita or two), I caved and decided to go. The party ended up being so much fun. We made a bunch of new friends (at least for that night), however, there came a moment when all of a sudden, everything stopped. The front door opened, and a cold gust of wind blew into the room…I looked up and made immediate eye contact with intense green eyes and I remember feeling anything but chilly. He was red faced and towering; fresh from a Vermont snowboarding trip I would later find out. As our eyes met, I turned my head and mouthed to my best friend across the room: "he's mine". He came in and we immediately struck up easy conversation. I remember making fun of him because he was from Connecticut…which was ironic because I was from Long Island and really had no ground to stand on. We talked all night and around 3:30am as the party was winding down, he lingered in the doorway. I assume he was waiting to walk out with me, but I stayed behind for some reason. When I came back into the room, he had vanished leaving no trace behind him. I promptly interrogated every single person at the party until I conjured a first and last name. Within minutes of leaving the gathering, I found and messaged him on Facebook that I was interested in getting to know him better. He felt the same way. The next day, it all felt like some sort of fever dream and I assumed we’d never speak again. To my surprise, he messaged me a few days later, and asked me out on a date. I was so nervous I couldn’t stop talking for probably a full hour straight. As the date came to an end, he began to open up and he told me the funniest story I had ever heard and made me laugh til I was almost in tears…and we’ve been pretty much inseparable ever since.

For all the days along the way
