The event includes prayers to Lord Ganesha, a Hindu diety known as the remover of obstacles. The Pithi ceremony involves loved ones rubbing a paste made of chickpeas, turmeric, and rosewater onto the face, arms and legs of the bride and groom. This is meant to symbolize cleansing of the body and the attainment of maturity for marriage. The Yagnopavit Ceremony is a traditional ceremony for Indian males known as the “thread ceremony.” The ceremony guides the male into taking a pledge of undertaking an eternal pursuit of knowledge, secular and spiritual.
