The shaving or the Sahra is a traditional Palestinian wedding tradition, where an evening party happens before the wedding which involves music, dancing, and food to celebrate the joining of families and the acceptance of the groom. During this party the groom used to be shaved by the brides family. Although this is no longer practiced we honor this tradition by letting the family smear shaving cream on the groom and any who wish to participate.
There will be Arabic dance music, Arabic line dancing (Dabke), belly dancing, the grooms will be lifted on chairs onto family members shoulders, and there will be a candle ceremony for the guest to participates in called the candle dance.
The candle dance is a passing of the torch event where any family or guest gets a small moment with the couple to say well wishes or advice. Each person wanting to participate will be given a taper candle decorated by the couple and their family. They will then stand in a wide circle around the couple and take turns sharing a moment and words with the couple. Today this dance is usually performed at weddings or baptisms as being a symbolic way of illuminating the newly betrothed or newborn in his new path to take.
