Flight
Edinburgh Airport is the easiest to fly into and has very easy connections into the city! There are direct flights from the following cities: Atlanta Boston Chicago New York Newark Orlando Philadelphia Washington D.C. (IAD) If you are unable to fly direct, I reccomend having a layover in Dublin Ireland. You are able to go through both British and American Customs and Immigration making it a much smoother arrival into either destination! Please be aware if you have a layover in the US upon your return home you will need to go through customs, immigration, collect your bags, check them again, and go through security again so please leave yourself plenty of time!
Travel Note
There are 3 ways to get from Edinburgh Airport into city center: Taxi's, Trams and Buses! I recommend taking a taxi versus an uber when leaving the airport as ubers can only access certain areas and can be difficult to find, there is not much of a price difference. When returning to the airport from the city an uber works too!
Travel Note
- Follow the signs to the Taxi Queue – When you are standing in the airport facing outside, this will be all the way down to your left - Walk outside and up the ramp, you will see the taxi’s at the top of the ramp to the right - There is no need to book one in advance, there are always taxis waiting or arriving quickly! - Just tell the taxi driver the name of the hotel and he will bring you right to it, taxi’s into Old Town or New Town are usually £30-£40, you can pay with cash or by card
Travel Note
- Follow the signs to the Tram– When you are standing in the airport facing outside, this will be all the way down to your left - Walk out the doors and across the courtyard to the tram lines - Buy a ticket on one of the machines, or the staff is always happy to help you buy a ticket! - There is only one tram line so you can board any tram that is leaving the airport, all of them will go to the same places! - Once you board the tram be sure to put your luggage on the luggage racks, they will make you do this as it is moving if you don’t - A conductor will walk around at some point to check your ticket, so keep it handy - When your stop is next, press a red ‘Stop’ button to let them know your stop is next - A one-way ticket is £8.00 and a round trip is £9.50 between the airport and town so I recommend buying round trip if your plan is to go back the same way! - Trams are not 24/7 so if arriving really late or early check the website to see if they will be running
Travel Note
- There are 3 different buses going into Edinburgh with different routes, Bus 100 goes into city center and will most likely work for you! - Go outside the airport and walk down to the left (be aware the bus has separate drop off and pick zones so if you see people getting off you cannot get on there) - Join the queue for the 100 bus - Board the bus with your luggage (there are luggage racks inside) - Buy your ticket on the bus using a tap credit card, or buy your ticket online before you board and show the driver! - Sit on the bus and press ‘Stop’ before your stop to let your driver know you want to get off - A ticket is £8.50 - Buses run 24/7 every 10-20 minutes
Train
You can take the train to and from Edinburgh from all over the UK, even to London! There are two main train stations in Edinburgh (Haymarket and Waverly), along with a few smaller ones. Edinburgh Waverly will bring you into the center of the city leaving you just a short walk or taxi from your hotel! There are numerous different train companies that provide different options. Trainline is a great website and app that will show you all the options. If traveling to other Scotland destinations by train you will be on a Scotrail train, you can use Trainline or Scotrail to book tickets!
