The Story of Us

We met in Saint-Marc, Haiti, while I was working as an English and French interpreter for the United Nations (UN). Lyman worked as an International Police Officer on a joint venture with the UN to protect voters in the Senatorial elections for Haiti. I worked on various teams, but we crossed paths at Saint Marc’s Police Station. We became acquaintances because the teams met at different election sites. One day, Lyman asked his interpreter, Junior, for my name. Junior not only asked for my name but my phone number as well to give to Lyman. This moment was the seed planted into the fertile soil of our existence; This is our Story. We stayed friends over the years, and he pursued me as his girlfriend. One day, I said yes, but by then, his contract had ended, and Lyman departed Haiti. Lyman contacted me via Skype and visited me between his International Police missions. I wanted to see him in the United States, but immigration circumstances prevented me from visiting. I called US Congressman Clyburn and spoke with Kenneth Barnes but to no avail. My residency application was not successful. We drifted apart as we became casualties to the uncongenial term “distance lovers.” One day, he reached out to see how I was doing. I shared with him that I started a successful business and was independent in the Dominican Republic. This reconnection was like water finally reaching the seed planted beneath the soil. A relationship that seemed dormant had roots sprouting above the surface. Lyman continued to visit me for a couple more years. On one visit, while staying at an Airbnb, he prepared the most astonishing site! Wearing a Middle Eastern robe with an exquisite display of candles, champagne, and seafood, he proposed to me. Happily, I said, “YES!” It took two years to get a Visa due to the unforeseeable timing of COVID-19, which impacted the processing of the United States Customs and Migration applications. To not let another moment pass us by, we contacted Congress Joe Wilson to assist us, and Lara Betsy supported our processes. After years of trials and tribulations, our moment had finally come for our love to blossom into our matrimonial union! Love stands the test of time.
