Words by Rory: had been thinking of asking "the question" for some time and as we climbed Mt. Whitney it seemed like the perfect opportunity. Not too many girls would be out here thru hiking the PCT or climbing the largest mountain in the lower 48. As we trekked through snow and bouldered up over loose rock, the tough climb up to the 14,505 ft summit would be worth it with a certain answer. We summited right before sunset and cowboy camped under the stars for the night. I didn't have a ring with me so I had to improvise. I had two starbursts left: Emily's favorite being the pink and mine the red. Hidden inside of my sleeping bag that night, I took the wrappers from each and super glued them into a ring. After making the ring, I saw a shooting star and made a wish to increase my chances for the upcoming morning. 5 am came quickly and another hiking buddy thankfully made it to the summit before sunrise. I stealthily filled him in and said I'd ask him to take a picture of Emily and I. As the sun started rising to the east, we set up to take a picture and I dropped down on one knee, pulled out the starburst ring, and asked Emily to marry me. Thankfully she said yes!
