The First Date

Five years ago Tyler Keit and I went on our first date. I was a junior in college when my friend asked me if I would be willing to go on a date with a guy she worked with, who was persistent that she at least got him my number. Not having much to lose, Ty and I exchanged some text and arranged a date. As many of you know, Tyler and I have not been dating for five years and therefore that first date was what we thought was going to be our last date. I will spare you the tedious details of the date and just chalk it up to timing.

Our Matchmakers

Fast forward two years, I was graduated from college and starting my first job which, I found out last minute would be based in Lansing, MI. I wasn’t having much luck finding a place to live on such short notice and resorted to posting on facebook asking if any of my friends or family knew of any places or people looking for roommates. To my surprise, in came a message from Tyler. He shared that his cousin and best friend lived in Lansing and had rented out a room in their house in the past and offered to connect me with them to see if we could work something out. I was unsure of this idea at first, as I didn’t even know Tyler well at this point, but after a few weeks passed by and still no place to live I decided to take him up on his offer. I met with his cousin, Meghann, shared some Moscow mules and decided to move in! Meghann and Alex were the most amazing roommates, turned friends, that a girl could ask for, so I was thankful for that random date a few years ago that lead me to them. Over the year I lived with them Ty and I talked on occasion and crossed paths a couple of times, but we were both seeing other people for most of that time. Although I would have never admitted it at that time, I was intrigued by Tyler; his carefree personality and adventurous soul was night and day from my own.

The (Second) First Date

When my one-year Lansing rotation was up, I moved back home to Grand Rapids. Tyler and I continued to exchange an occasional text or snap chat, in which he would tell you that he was continuously “shooting his shot” and that I “wasn’t having it”. One night I was out with some girlfriends and to this day I am not sure what urged me to do so other than maybe a few too many glasses of wine, but I decided to “make a move”, which to me was sending Tyler a text that simply read “hi”. Tyler did not get the text until the next morning, at which point I assumed I wouldn’t get a response, but I was wrong. And let me tell you, his response was much more engaging than my “hi”. Before I knew it we had spent most of the day texting back and fourth talking about all sorts of things the both of us had been up to. Ever since that day we continued to talk more and more, never missing a day, and quickly moving from text to phone calls. After a few weeks of talking via phone, we decided that we should go on a second, first date. We planned it out and after I returned from my spring break trip he was going to come to Grand Rapids and take me on a date. Tyler told me multiple times that I better not change my mind or bail on our date, which I had no intentions of doing but God had a different plan. While on our trip we got a call that my grandma was sick, and my mom and I changed our flights and flew to Bay City to be with her. I told Tyler that I needed to cancel our date plans and that although I was in Bay City (where he was living) I didn’t think it was a good time to go on a date. He was understanding and told me that if I changed my mind to let him know. A few days went by and my grandma was feeling better and better, so I decided that a night out may do me some good. Tyler picked me up from the hospital for our second first date that night, and every night after until I needed to go back to Grand Rapids for work. very weekend after we somehow made it work to see each other.

Falling in Love

For the first time ever I knew what it felt like to be "falling in love". My feelings for Tyler grew quicker than I knew they could or that I wanted to admit they were. As cliché as it sounds, I wasn't only falling in love with Tyler but I always loved the person that I was when I was with him. He brought out things in me that no one had before. He challenged me to see life a different way. I would never have imaged the next year to workout the way it did, but again, God had the perfect plan the whole time. I started a new job that was travel/remote, allowing me to be based anywhere so it only made sense for me to move to Bay City. Tyler and I rented the perfect little house on the Bay and as many of you know, Tyler bought a business. As if that wasn’t enough going on, we decided it would be a great time for us to get a puppy, so along came our Gracie Girl. A few weeks into Tyler’s first season running his new business, Rooted by Keit’s, we found out that we were going to need to find a new place to live. It was the middle of the pandemic and probably one of the busiest times of our lives, yet somehow, we managed to find and close on our perfect first home in 30 days. Sometime in all this chaos we also decided Gracie Girl deserved a live-in best friend and brother, so Mr. Kobe jack joined our little family. Our new house needed some work, including a large outdoor patio project to ensure we do not get water in the house when it raises over the seawall. Once greenhouse season was done Tyler got to work on what felt like the never-ending patio project.

The Proposal

For at least two months, Tyler has talked about his “fish fry banger” he was going to have for all of his family and friends once our patio project was finished, but little did I know the fish fry party would turn into the celebration of our next chapter. On Sunday, October 25th Tyler proposed to me at the Public House restaurant, which has always been a special place for us (first date, where we go to celebrate big exciting things like Ty buying a business and so on). I thought that I couldn’t be happier than I was walking out of the public house that day, ENGAGED to my best friend, but coming home to the surprise of so many of our family and friends to share the celebration with truly made it the perfect day. It has already been the adventure of a lifetime, but I cant wait to continue to build our story together starting with this exciting next chapter
