The Sacrament of Marriage in the Eastern Orthodox Church derives from the belief that marriage was first instituted by God in the Garden of Eden beginning with the first man, Adam, and the first woman, Eve. As such, the couple does not exchange vows, but is instead united by the grace of God.
The marriage ceremony, which is steeped in symbolism, is celebrated as two services: the Betrothal, where the rings are exchanged, and the Crowning (Stephana), where prayers are offered and the crowns of marriage are placed upon the heads of the couple.
The rite of crowning is followed by the reading of the epistle and the Gospel. The couple then drinks from one common cup and are led around the prayer table by the priest. As the wedding ceremony ends, the priest removes the crowns and offers the bride and groom one final blessing.
