It was Thanksgiving week, 2009, when our paths first crossed—though at the time, neither of us had any idea what the future held. I was tagging along with my best friend, Michelle and her boyfriend, just looking to continue the party. We ended up at his best friend’s Domingo’s mom’s house. I remember walking in, seeing him lounging on the couch with his brother. I decided to sit at the kitchen counter, just observing and hanging out. That’s when Roly, with his charm and easygoing vibe, started a conversation. He poured me a glass of wine, and we instantly hit it off. I thought he was cool—he could hold a great conversation, and we just connected on a friendly level. I didn’t think much of it then; we were kids, after all. Over the next few months, we kept running into each other at events. He’d always try to catch my attention, and I noticed him more and more. He’d ask for my number, but I’d always say no. At that point, I wasn’t really looking for a boyfriend. Then came this one party I really didn’t want to be at. I was feeling out of place, so I left, just to sit in my car and chill for a bit. Sure enough, Roly came outside to keep me company. That’s when something changed—I realized there was more to this connection. Finally, we went to dinner at RA Sushi with a group of friends. My sister was there, and I couldn’t resist asking her, “What do you think of him?” She gave me the thumbs up, and there was something about him that caught her attention too. That was the moment I realized maybe there was more to this guy than I thought. Time passed, and we grew closer. Our bond deepened, and we reached milestones—like buying our first home together. It was one of those moments when we were walking through the house, inspecting everything to make sure it was perfect. I was focused on the details of the kitchen when I heard Roly say, “Seven years ago, we met in the kitchen.” I rolled my eyes, joking, “Oh, stop with the lovey-dovey stuff.” I was way more focused on the house than on what he was saying. But then he turned around, dropped to one knee, and proposed. I couldn’t believe it. In the kitchen, where it all began, he was asking me to be his forever. In that moment, I realized how far we’d come—buying our home, building our careers, raising our beautiful daughter—and now, we’re here, ready to start our next chapter together. I’m so excited to marry my best friend, Mi Vida, Mi Alma, who made that first glass of wine so memorable. Here’s to our forever, together.
