We met in 2008 at American High School in Fremont. We were sophomores in Mr. Iglesias’s AP European History class. Neither of us remembers the moment we met, but we both fondly remember bonding over Hot Cheetos Puffs, Hershey’s Cookies N Crème, and Arizona iced teas. In hindsight there may have been signs of a budding romance, but in those days we made each other laugh and became best friends and confidants.
By 2010, we had become tight as two edamames in a pod and shared everything about each other. We took AP Calculus together and I tutored Nolee at her house. We were spending a lot of our after school time together, and two months into tutoring, we shared our first kiss.
During college, we were 2000 miles apart for 4 years, but our thoughts were seconds apart as we constantly texted each other and Skyped almost every night. The weeks of school breaks when we could meet, we would spend it exploring the Bay Area. When we finally reunited permanently in 2015, life became much easier. We could be there for the other, how we wanted.
By the summer of 2019, we were preparing for a hike to the top of Half Dome mountain in Yosemite. I knew I had to propose to her at the top and I involved our friends, Gloria and Fady in the plan. At the cables leading to the top of Half Dome, we were frozen in shock and fear. It took 10 minutes of urging from Gloria to convince us to climb up, as she knew what surprise was in store for Nolee. At the top, when I pulled out the ring, Nolee thought it was food and let out a loud “What!” when she realized what was happening. We enjoyed the rest of the hike as fiancés!
