The summer between Sarah's first and second year of medical school she decided to stay in Albany and volunteer. When she got an email about joining the softball team she thought "why not? I'll be there anyway!" and signed up with some friends. Michael, a college pitcher, had been on the AMC softball team for 3 years. He was not looking forward to any new recruits who might put their 4th championship win at jeopardy. However, when Sarah showed up at softball he thought "well, this might not be so bad..." They were friends for months and finally started going out towards the end of Michael's fourth year of medical school. Michael found Sarah to be way funnier than he expected, while Sarah loved how kind Michael was - she was terrible at softball but he never made her feel bad about it. Neither of them were looking for anything serious, but they quickly fell in love. Michael also fell in love with Cecelia, Sarah's cat, and to this day it's unclear who he loves more. When Michael matched at Mount Sinai for anesthesia residency, they knew they could make the 2-hour long distance work. Michael and Sarah commuted back and forth, spending weekends trying new restaurants in Albany, enjoying long walks in Central Park, going skiing during the winter and hiking in the summer. They traveled to Burlington for breweries and Lake George for sun and swimming, and found every opportunity possible to see each other despite busy schedules. The weekend after Sarah matched to Mount Sinai for her OB/GYN residency, Michael and Sarah looked at one last apartment (that they ended up signing!) and went for a walk around the Central Park Reservoir on their way to oyster happy hour at Mermaid Inn. While on that walk, Michael asked Sarah to marry him. Sarah obviously said yes!
