How We Met

March 7, 2019

In 2018, Katie's friends encouraged her to sign up for a reality show coming to the Philadelphia area, Married At First Sight. Yes it sounds bizarre, why would someone marry a stranger? All her friends were convinced this would be a great opportunity for her and that the experts would find her the "perfect match". Katie was hesitant at first, but figured she had nothing to lose. Months went by of answering a thousand questionnaires, interviews, therapy, and psychological evaluations with relationship experts. Did she get picked? No. Did she have Lifetime production at her friend’s house where she was living at 7:00am and taping for days? Yes. Did it lead to a cameo on TV and 15 minutes of fame? Barely. It was disappointing but a little bit of a relief to hear, "sorry we didn't find you a match". Katie’s perspective on marriage had changed forever and she would have never gotten that if she had not been part of that extreme process. It helped Katie identify what she was looking for in a partner and not to settle for less. Fast forward to 2019, Katie took that energy into saving and buying a house. On February 18, 2019 Katie closed on her house in Palmyra, New Jersey only a mile away from Roger Cullen, her Bumble date two weeks later. Roger was living with two roommates in Cinnaminson, New Jersey and working as a teacher in Philadelphia. He was dating, but nothing serious. Their first conversations on Bumble were mainly about teaching, but as they continued messaging they found a lot in common. The first date was March 7, 2019 at Yard House, the following week, Yards Brewery (coincidence), Sixers games, Phillies games, shore trips, camp trips, concerts etc. They packed in a lot that first year, good thing they did before a global pandemic and lockdown hit. Something that could threaten a new couple, not Roger and Katie, it only made their bond stronger. In the end, Roger was her perfect match and everything happened for a reason.

Engagement Story

Love Park- How perfect!

One Saturday in October, Katie went to a Temple game (of course ha) with her family while Roger "had other plans". He met up with his mom, Jackie, to go ring shopping. During Thanksgiving he overheard conversations between cousins planning a brunch in Philly around Christmas so they could visit the Christmas Village (in Love Park) after brunch. After a couple months of conversations with Katie's mom (Phyllis), Roger decided the perfect day to pop the big question, Sunday, December 19th after brunch. On that Sunday Katie and Phyllis went together to brunch at Winkle to meet up with Kate, Grace, and Cecelia Honeyman (sister in law and nieces), as well as Emma and Megan Beck (cousins) for a "girls day" (that is what she thought). During brunch everyone knew what was about to happen except Katie. She even mentioned that "it was too cold for the Christmas Village and we can skip it." Kate Honeyman was not having it, she insisted and said "we should meet at the LOVE statue". Roger got there early and brunch went a lot longer than anticipated. He waited for what felt like forever in the cold texting Phyllis and Kate. When we arrived we all took a picture at the LOVE statue. Katie noticed someone who looked a lot like Roger and even asked Grace if that guy over there looked like Roger (Grace just laughed). Well that guy kept walking towards them and she realized it actually was Roger. Katie was at first frustrated that he was crashing their "girls day", but as he walked toward the statue he began to kneel down and Katie finally figured it all out. The crowd around them cheered loudly after she said YES! After the proposal Katie was disappointed that no one got a video of the proposal, but after a few minutes instagram messages started flooding in from a famous Philly social media handle @phillychitchat, they took a video of almost the whole thing using a drone! Roger really surprised Katie and that is not easy to do! It was PERFECT!
