We're one of those online dating success stories--Hinge was our app of choice. Neither of us remembers the pickup line, but we do remember the paragraphs and paragraphs of messages we exchanged before we met in person. Our first date was dinner and axe-throwing...or at least it would have been, if Rod hadn't gotten food poisoning. Kathryn wasn't sure if Rod cancelled their first date because he had some bad chicken or because he chickened out, but she decided to give him a chance to reschedule. Their real first date was for drinks on Halloween. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the Instagram Egg walked into a bar, and the rest is history.
In January, Rod and Kathryn went on a week-long road trip to Zion National Park, for what Kathryn thought was Rod's birthday trip. Turns out, the second day of the trip they would have a lot more to celebrate. After the highway to Bryce National Park was snowed out, Rod made a quick change of plans and drove them to a slot canyon hike near Kanab, Utah. The eight miles of careening down a slippery, muddy, snow-covered dirt road in Rod's sedan was what Kathryn might call a "near death experience." When they finally got out of the car, Kathryn swore to herself that this better be the best hike of her life. Turns out, it was. They hiked through sparkling fresh snow that covered red rock slopes and cacti. Rod set up a tripod to take a photo of them, then surprised Kathryn by getting down on one knee. Sure, they got stuck in the snow on the way back. Sure, the first thing Kathryn did in her new ring was help push Rod's car up an icy hill. But with that ice on her finger and her fiancé by her side, she couldn't care less.
