Our Story

Our story begins with the classic Shakespearian meet cute. Rob pressed "like" on Amy's Hinge, #notsponsored (though we would welcome it) profile. Then, nothing happened because Amy did not have Hinge notifications turned on.  Then, the hinge messaging began. We were messaging back and forth for a couple of days when Amy left for her annual friend's trip to watch March Madness. That year, the destination was the beautiful, scenic city of Pittsburgh #sponsored.   Amy would sneak off from her friends in the arena to message me back. As the messages picked up, it was clear that Rob needed to give this girl his number. So, Friday morning, before she went out to Fallingwater, he sent it to her.  The text messages continued throughout the weekend. They were coming in so frequently that she turned off all notifications while she was driving home from Pittsburgh so her friend would not be alerted to the budding romance…. Yet. My (Rob's) journey through this moment was less dramatic. I was at home and texting what Amy's friends described as "novels." Those novels, however, proved to be a best-seller for one audience member. Before long, a first date was set. We would meet in person for the first time in downtown Lynchburg, as it was conveniently located halfway between Roanoke and Charlottesville. We walked through the downtown, then down along the river, stopping at the farmers market and little shops along the way. A farmer's market detour would become a staple activity in our relationship. After lunch, Amy had to get back to Charlottesville for a party, and Rob had to get back to Roanoke for a play, but the connection was there, and soon another date was set. In Lynchburg once again. We both agree this date was the turning point that this could be something serious. We went mini golfing at Tiny Town in Lynchburg, with Amy claiming victory. As it got dark, we decided the date was not over, so we went to an ice cream food truck and had the two largest ice creams either one of us had ever seen. In the coming weeks, our relationship deepened. Amy asked Rob how often he thought we should see each other in person, given the roughly 90-minute drive between. When Rob said, "Once a week at a minimum," Amy was shocked. However, she has since come to Rob's point of view.  By June, we were boyfriend and girlfriend, with Rob asking Amy on his one day off between Youth VBS and Youth Camp. She said yes, and it wouldn't be the last time she said. Over that summer, we built the rhythm of our relationship and slowly introduced one another to the significant people in our lives.  As Fall approached, we both began to sense that this relationship had staying power. In October, Rob, ever the romantic, told Amy he loved her while one lunch. Amy still agrees that while the sentiment was no surprise to her, the timing of the reveal sure was.  November would bring extended times meeting one another's families and distant friends. Amy came to Charlotte to cheer Rob on in the marathon and meet his whole immediate family. Rob went to Richmond to meet Amy's whole family for Thanksgiving.  After the first of the year, it was time to make all the engagement preparations. We got Amy's great-grandmother's ring, and it turned into a ring fit for Amy. Over long phone calls and long visits, we dreamed of the future that we would build together. As the day of engagement approached, Amy wondered when it would come.  Finally, on the Monday after Easter, the day came! Rob took Amy back to the arboretum behind the Forum Hotel, which was a place where she had taken him on a date early in our relationship. There, with a photographer hiding in the bushes, Rob asked, and she said yes.  Now, the story continues into the future, and we are excited that you can join us in celebrating the start of this next chapter!
