ALL NIGHT LONG * * *
We met working nightshift in the Neonatal ICU! Emma had been working as a NICU nurse for a few years when Kyle started working in the NICU as a respiratory therapist. At first our conversations were brief, little chats in passing or during care times...aka over diaper changes, temperature checks, lab draws, bath time, assessments of respiratory needs, etc. We got to know each other slowly by asking more details about each other's lives, as we took care of very very tiny lives. Over time, working with each other started making the nights go by faster. Running to deliveries, waiting on XRAYs, lunch breaks, admissions, weight checks, etc. - everything just became better with one another there. Our care times together got funnier, as we fought to keep functioning in the middle of the night. Made up scenarios and sarcastic comments to one another made our patient's rooms light up with laughter. Kyle started falling in love with Emma's heart for the babies & her coworkers and her cackle - which would carry through the whole unit. And Emma started falling in love with how unbelievably kind and compassionate Kyle was - and how adorable he was with the babies. Kyle felt like safety when Emma was nervous or scared. Sad and serious situations felt less overwhelming when one another were there. Our trust and love for one another built up slowly and quietly in the background of the all chaos, joy, tears, cackles, alarms, and babies crying. Then FINALLY, after slowly getting know each other, months of quality banter, endless care times later.. Kyle asked Emma to go to a Nuggets game with him. Best yes she’s ever spoken, until she said yes to forever at midnight on New Years 2025 when Kyle proposed! And here we are… ;)
