Train A leaves the station traveling at 60 miles per hour traveling towards town B. Train B leaves the station two hours later traveling at 70 miles per hour towards town A. The distance between towns A and B is 250 miles. How long after train B leaves the station will the two trains meet?

Answer

Distance = velocity * time Train A cover 60mph*2hrs = 120miles before train B leaves the station, which leaves 130 miles of separation. Now take the above equation and solve for time. Time = distance / velocity Since the trains are traveling towards each other we can add their velocities together. Time = 130 miles / (60mph+70mph) Therefore: Time = 130 / 130 = 1 The trains will meet 1 hour after train B leaves the station.
