For those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of traveling up the Northern California coastline or through its inland valleys, we highly encourage making a few stops along the way to explore some of our favorite spots. There are several routes to choose from, each offering its own unique scenery and charm. Whether you take the scenic coastal route up Highway 1 through Point Reyes, or opt for the more direct path through Anderson Valley and the Navarro Redwoods, you’ll find plenty of interesting places to visit. Below, we’ve listed some of our favorite stops worth checking out along the journey.
Stop by the dog-friendly Limantour Beach or hike out to the northernmost point of the seashore at Tomales Point. Point Reyes is full of incredible sights and is well worth the detour as you head out of the Bay Area. No trip to Point Reyes is complete without a stop at Palace Market for a cup of their buffalo milk soft serve. With its incomparably smooth and creamy texture, it’s a staple treat for us whenever we’re passing through.
Our love for oysters runs deep. Stop and savor some freshly shucked oysters or grab a bag to enjoy later as part of a perfect beach picnic.
For incredible Puerto Rican food just off Highway 1, Sol Food in San Rafael is a frequent stop for us as we travel through the area. Their twice-fried, cheese-smothered tostones con queso and the savory pollo al horno are both classic favorites that never disappoint
For a short hike down to a beautiful bluff with stunning views of the cliffs and the Pacific Ocean, Navarro Point is a perfect stop right off Highway 1, just north of where Highway 128 meets the coast. Top tier sunset viewing location and one of our favorite places to stop along the way.
Burgers. Brews. Softserve. Need i say more? If Jack said it was one of the best burgers he's ever had its definitely worth the stop. Make sure to get the soft serve greek style, its Riley's favorite!
Tasty baked goods and great coffee make this a nice midway stop through Anderson Valley.
Awesome spot to get breakfast in Mendocino Village. Worth the short wait to get a table.
A great seafood spot right on the Bodega Bay waterfront, featuring beer-battered and panko-crusted fish and chips, along with other classic coastal favorites. An unlimited condiment bar really seals the deal—tartar sauce and ranch should always be for the people.
