Fern Forest Nature center, true to its name, is an urban oasis and home to more than 30 varieties of ferns. The center provides an array of nature programming that highlights the 10 plant communities identified within its boundaries. Established in 1979, fern Forest protects a Florida that has mostly vanished along this coast. This urban wilderness area takes you back in time before 1905, when the destruction of natural habitats began with dredging canals to drain the Everglades. Here you enter the original floodplain of Cypress Creek before its waters were diverted into ditches for agriculture, changing the hydrology of the landscape forever. Fern Forest is only one of the beautiful parks that Broward County Parks and Recreation Division has to offer. It manages almost 6,500 acres of park land, encompassing nearly 50 parks. For more than 60 years, Broward County parks has provided one-of-a-kind recreational and educational experiences for residents and visitors. See for yourself at any of their 14 diverse regional parks, 4 lush nature centers, and 12 pristine natural areas. Their facilities also include water parks, campgrounds, a target range, a multipurpose stadium, an observatory, mountain bike trails, dog parks, a velodrome, an educational farm and stables, disc golf courses, and more.
