How They Met

April 16, 2022

Lysia and Ricky met at Asian Prom - one of those nights you expect to be fun and forgettable, but that ends up changing everything. A mutual friend, Brenda, introduced them, and neither expected it to be anything more than a casual hello. Lysia had just become single and was focused on enjoying the night, while Ricky hadn’t even planned to attend. But his friends in Tulsa really wanted to see him, and after some convincing, he called in to work and made the spontaneous 4-hour drive from Texas to Oklahoma. They danced, attempted to talk over the blaring music, and simply enjoyed the evening. There wasn’t an immediate spark or some grand moment - just two people having fun. That night, they both stayed over at Brenda’s house, and the next morning brought the classic post-party recap. Lysia, now much shyer without a drink in hand, stayed quiet while everyone shared their highlights from the night. As Ricky and his cousins were getting ready to leave for Texas, he walked over to Lysia’s car, leaned in to say goodbye, and told her it was nice to meet her. Lysia looked into his sparkly brown eyes and thought to herself, Wow, he’s actually really cute. As he started to walk away, a voice in her head said, if you don’t say something now, you might never see him again. She quickly rolled down her window, called him back, and asked for his number. From that moment on, they texted every day and night. Their first FaceTime call had Lysia so nervous she could barely speak, but soon enough, their conversations flowed easily - sometimes lasting for hours, even falling asleep on the phone together. Long distance wasn’t always easy, but it helped them build a strong foundation, and made every moment they spent together that much more meaningful.
