We met in 2012 at Prairie View A & M University in Econ class. Ricky would walk into class and sit in the seat directly in front of me and I would always think “who is this fashionable dude with the tattoos and always falling asleep in class?” It wasn’t until later that I found out that he worked overnight at Hewlett Packard. Although I knew nothing about Ricky, it was something about him that was different and it intrigued me. One day as we were in class a guy tries to get my attention to pass me a note and guess who was awake at the time to witness it? You guessed right, Ricky. I don’t remember what the note said but in Ricky’s words “I wasn’t having it and if anyone was going to be mackin’ it was going to be me”. Mind you Ricky did not say this to me that day, it wasn’t until much later did he disclose this information. As the semester progressed Ricky and I would occasionally talk inside and outside the classroom, we even worked on a group project together (which he did all by himself because he didn’t trust my work and he needed to graduate). We were merely associates at that time; we both had our own relationships or situationship we were in. Ricky would go on to graduate that semester, while I continued to pursue my degree. Although we had only known each other for a short period of time, I thought it would be a great idea to get him a card for graduation. I’m not sure what possessed me to write this, but I told him not to forget about me and we should keep in touch. Over the next few years a love/hate friendship would form between us. I say love, because we would talk on the phone endlessly, hanging out occasionally then go to not speaking to each other for months at a time. In 2016, we reconnected thanks to his brother Christian and over the next four years we would date, travel, raise my dog-son, get our first apartment together, embark on new journeys, and get ENGAGED! To our family and friends, thank you for the love and support!
