Basically, sarcasm brought Nora and Richard together. They met in tech school after basic training in the Air Force. In more appropriate language than was actually used, he told her to smile more and she told him to go away. Their relationship grew when Richard began to visit Nora when she was working in the dorm and they bonded over their shared love for basketball, music, and movies. Somehow, they made it work for four years long distance before becoming engaged.

When Nora was visiting Richard's hometown in Tennessee/North Carolina, he brought her up to a beauty spot at the top of the Appalachian Mountains. Richard had planned on the day being sunny but, as the two of them stood alone, the clouds made anything beyond the mountain invisible. He told her that, like how they could see nothing in front of them at this moment, he didn't know what the future held but he knew he wanted her in it. Richard popped the question with Nora's great-grandmother and namesake's wedding ring that was used almost a century before.
