Flight
• Portland-(PWM) This airport is the largest of the three. Southwest, Delta, United, Jet Blue among others have regular flights there. It is 1.5 hrs south from Mt Vernon, Me. It is located in a larger city by Maine standards. They have car rentals in the airport of all the major car rental agencies. • Bangor-(BGR) This is an international airport but you’d never know it. It’s super small and very much in a rural “city” town. It is 1.5 hrs north of Mt Vernon, ME. If you are flying from Florida Allegiant flies here from St. Pete and the flights tend to be MUCH cheaper than with other airlines to other airports. However, the flight options with Allegiant are fewer. BUT they are nonstop which is huge perk as travel to Maine tends to always be a connection flight situation. We use this Allegiant flight often! The airport has Avis, Budget, and Enterprise onsite at the airport. There is also an airport hotel that is very easy to walk from. • Augusta, (AUG) This is a regional airport so if you choose to fly here it will on a puddle hopper flight (Cape Airways) out of Boston Logan Airport. I’ve only ever booked through Travelocity and in that situation they book you on a regular airline such as United and then attach the connection with Cape Air. You just put in your final destination when you are researching on Travelocity.) It is QUITE the experience lol. You can’t bring anything on the plane as a carryon (not even a purse) they take everything from you and put it in the nose of the plane. (You may also want to be aware that because there are only 6 passengers it is not uncommon for them to delay this leg of the flight over night or cancel it all together. Just know this as a precaution.) AUG is only 35 minutes from Mt. Vernon. They have Hertz as a rental car option in the airport. It is an extremely small airport, only one gate, and you walk out to the airplane.

. Of course there are standard hotels in Augusta and Farmington which will be about 30 minutes away. But, the area of Maine where we have our house is all about Lake/Cabin life. The options that are closer to Mt. Vernon will be cabins owned by family’s which are available for rent, or Bed and Breakfast style Inn’s, or campgrounds. All have different price ranges as I found. In my research the Air BnB’s or Vrbo’s were listed as being in the towns of Belgrade Lakes, Mt. Vernon, Readfield, or Vienna. The lakes they may list are: Echo Lake, Flying Pond, Parker Pond, Whittier Pond, Black Pond, or Long Pond. And our lake is Flying Pond for reference.
