ETIAS Application
Something to keep an eye on. This was initially required in January of 2026 in order to travel to Portugal, it has now been moved to the end of 2026 so it should not be required. However, be mindful of this because the requirement date has changed multiple times. This would be an absolute must have in order to enter in the EU. It's a fairly simple application process. You can also download the ETIAS app - this might be preferred for many.

Passport Requirements
All travelers are required to obtain and travel with a passport. The passport cannot be expired or expiring prior to 6 months from traveling, and it also must be valid for at least 3 months after your return date from Portugal. If your current passport does not meet the travel requirements you will need to have your passport renewed. It is highly advisable to not wait on this, all counties are different and the wait times can vary. Best practice: If it's expiring in 2026 go ahead and renew that to be on the safe side.

Global Entry (U.S. Only Program) & New EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
While this is not a requirement for travel it certainly helps expedite the security and customs process upon your return to the U.S.. If you already have Global Entry be sure to double check your personal information listed and make sure it matched your passport information. Based on our research this could take up to 60 days to complete so plan accordingly if you choose to obtain this. Highly Advisable. EU Entry/Exit System: As of October 2025, the EU began rolling out this new system for non-EU travelers. You'll need to provide biometric data (fingerprints + facial scan) when entering the Schengen Area (which includes Portugal). This biometric check is independent of Global Entry 0 it's done by EU border authorities, not U.S. Customs Border Patrol.
