From the start, our lives were intertwined — dancing around each other without ever officially meeting. Our parents once shared boating trips together, and our groups of friends spent their youth side by side, making memories in the same places, at the same times. We shared mutual friends, attended the same family & friends gatherings, and even had childhood friendships that mirrored each other — Always just passing by, never crossing paths. After moving back to Utah in the spring of 2022, a small decision unknowingly set the stage for us. That winter, after launching my own canine boarding company, I found myself caring for MaLeek’s cat, Knight. On one Florida trip, I sent MaLeek a playful photo of my cocktail, acting as though I was on the beach as well; that lighthearted moment sparked an endless conversation, and soon he asked me to dinner. Our first date was sushi — our favorite. It started awkwardly, but one comment about his plain bowl of rice broke the ice and made us laugh. Afterward, we grabbed gelato, where I teased him about not liking sweets: “If you’re gonna hang out with me, you’re gonna have a sweet tooth.” He just smirked — classic MaLeek. And that’s how it began — a story wrapped in sarcasm, sushi, a shared love for animals.
