Our Love Story

An HBCU Love Story

Their love story began one Wednesday night at Late Night Breakfast on the campus of Prairie View A&M University. Reuben noticed Kennedy as she exited the MSC (The Cafe) with her friends. He stopped in his tracks while on the phone with his mom. She asked, "Are you okay?" and he said, “Yes. I just saw this really pretty girl.” Later, Reuben realized he and Kennedy were friends on Twitter. He sent her a DM and said, “I’ve been meaning to say this for a while, but I see you around campus from time to time, and I just wanted to say you’re beautiful, love.” “Thank you so much!” Kennedy responded. “No problem, lovely. I’m sure you get that often,” Reuben said. “Lol, not really, but it’s still nice to hear,” Kennedy replied. “Well, you definitely should. May I ask your name, if you don't mind?” “Yes, my name is Kennedy. What about you?” “My name is Reuben. Nice to meet you.” Kennedy said, “Nice to meet you too! So, from now on, we will speak to each other!” “Aww, most definitely lol. That wasn’t even an option not to speak.” A few days later, the two ran into each other at the café. Kennedy noticed him sitting at a table about to eat lunch. She tapped on the table and said, “Hey Reuben!” He looked up and responded, “Oh hey! What’s up?” That night, Reuben texted Kennedy to tell her how her speaking to him had made his day! They exchanged Snapchats, and that was all for a while. Around Christmas 2019, Kennedy posted four photos to wrap up the year. Reuben responded to her post and said, “I don’t know what it is, but every time I see you post a picture or something, I feel like I just have to tell you that you are so beautiful, lovely. Please don’t think I’m weird or whatever for bothering you, but I’d love to get to know you better.” Kennedy responded, “OMG, that is so sweet! I don’t think you are weird at all! And sure... I want to let you know I have a boyfriend, but I would love to be friends if that is okay?” Reuben didn’t want any friends and also didn’t want to offend Kennedy. He replied, “Oh wow, I’m so sorry. I had no idea—my apologies!” It was about half a month later when Reuben responded to a scripture Kennedy posted on Snapchat and told her how much he loved that scripture. Kennedy replied, “It is a great scripture. I also wanted to let you know I am no longer with my boyfriend. However, I do not want you to feel like a rebound because I am not that type of person, but I would love to get to know you.” And the rest is history... God brought two people together, and after four years of dating, they have grown in life, spirituality, and love for each other every day. They are a true HBCU love story! Reuben and Kennedy are excited to share this special union with the ones they love.
