Tipping in Peru is different from the US mainly because of the currency change. A lot of restaurants or places Don really ask for tips but if there is a tip on the bill and you are feeling generous I would not recommend tipping more than S/20, not $20.
The first thing you will want to make sure is that your phone is unlocked. This is done automatically if you pay for your phone upfront or if you have finished paying your phone off and you have called your carrier. If you are making payments on your phone usually your phone is locked and you will not be able to use a different SIM card. If your phone is unlocked all you need to do is go to a local carrier in Peru and purchase a new SIM card. You have a few options including Movistar and Claro (we personally use Movistar). Switch the current SIM out of your phone and insert the new one. That’s basically it.
Nowadays most carriers will offer an international phone plan that you can pay per day. AT&T offers a plan for $10 a day this option can be turned on automatically by just disabling airplane mode while in Peru and you will receive a text message stating they have added this to your account. At $10 a day however this option can get expensive pretty quickly so having an unlocked phone is the preferred method as it’s normally around S/.56 (around $13-14) for unlimited the whole month but if this is your only option it will work.

To make calls to any Peruvian number within Peru, you do not need to use the country code (+51). Just dial the 9 digit cell phone number. Land-lines are slightly different in that they only have 8 digits. If you want to call a land-line number, dial "0" and then the city code (we will be in lima so it will be "1") before the 8 digit number. It should follow the format 0/1/??-???-???. You shouldn't need these but here is a list of city codes in Peru: Lima: 1 Cusco/ Machu Picchu/ Sacred Valley: 84 Arequipa/ Colca Canyon: 54 Puno/ Lake Titicaca: 51 Puerto Maldonado: 82 Iquitos: 65 Ica: 56
Yes. Though it is recommended to do this through WhatsApp to avoid international fees. If the person is dialing directly without WhatsApp the person must first dial the international access code "011" and then the country code for Peru which is "51". after that it just depends on whether its a land-line or cell phone. Cell Phone: 011/51/9??/???/??? (Cell phones just use the number right away after the country code) Land-line: 011/51/1/???/???? (Land-lines use the city code after the country code)
