How it All Started

First comes love, then comes marriage

It was a hot muggy day July 20th, 2019. I (Renita) was living in Phoenix, AZ and was invited to an event. I was a little hesitant to go especially by myself so I called a few of my friends &asked if they wanted to go with me &they agreed. Upon our arrival, we were greeted at the entrance by the host & this handsome tall dark skin guy. They both spoke to us but I noticed the tall friend who kept starring. Being the person I am, I asked him "do you know me?" He responded and said "No I don't think so" I then asked "So why are you starring at me like you know me" He responded and said "You're beautiful that's why I'm starring at you. My name is Nick what's yours?" I said Renita. He then asked me if I lived in Phoenix &I told him yes & asked where he lived, he responded, "in Minnesota". I told him that I use to live there & asked how he knew the host. Nick said they grew up in the same neighborhood in Liberia & he worked with the host's wife in Minnesota. We chatted a little bit & then he asked for my number. I told him no but he can have my Facebook. He said ok & we went inside to engage with the others at the party. As the night went on, I noticed Nick couldn't keep his eyes off me. I didn't ask him what he was starring at again, because I already knew what it was lol! I just smiled & went on about my night. When the evening came to an end, the guys walked my friends & I to the car & Nick came up & said " I just messaged you on Facebook. When's the next time you'll be in Minnesota?" I responded & said, " I'll be there for July 26. I hope you know my 26 is on you" He said, "Of course! Just make sure you let me know when you get in town." As planned, I flew to Minnesota & stayed with my friend for the weekend. Unsurprisingly, Nick messaged me on Facebook but I didn't respond to his messages. I was too busy hanging out with my friends. Once, I arrived back home to Phoenix, I received a message from Nick saying "that's bad you did to me" lol I apologized to him explaining I was busy with my friend & didn't have time to see him when I was in town. He asked if he could have my number & I finally gave in & gave it to him. We talked on the phone for a few weeks & video chatted & he asked if I could take a weekend off to come see him. I agreed & he flew me out to Minnesota for us to get to know each other. Nick was the perfect gentleman the entire trip & when I returned to Phoenix by no surprise we continued to chat. Before I knew it I was back in Minnesota almost every other weekend. The last trip I took to Minnesota, he told me he wanted something serious & that he wanted us to be together. I wasn't really surprised, because deep down inside I felt the same way. Nick & I became official in September of 2019 & agreed that the only way we could really make it work is if we lived in the same place. Because I had lived in Minnesota before, we agreed for me to relocate & for us to move in together, but before we could Nick asked for my mother's number. I moved out of my mother's home almost 10 years prior so it was a bit strange to me that he wanted her number. When I asked him why, he said "I'm a traditional man & I cant move in with a woman. I need to speak with your mom so she knows who you're coming to" I was shocked but gave him her number and he called her & introduced himself & explained how in order for us to really know each other we had to live together. After they spoke, I prayed about it & with God's grace & guidance, we took a leap of faith & I relocated back to Minnesota December 2019. The beauty of it all, Nick & I put our guts, hearts, & trusted God. In September 2021 after 2 years of dating, Nick felt it was time to advance to our next journey. He popped the question with my close friends & family present. Honestly speaking, this man has made me the happiest woman in world & I could NEVER trade Nick for anything or anyone. I'm forever grateful that God has blessed me with my person for life.
