Brena and Reina's story began in a city called Santos, in Brazil. Reina had just moved there, after growing up in California and going to college on the East Coast, to pursue her dream of playing professional soccer. Brena, originally from Rio, played for historic Brazilian club Santos FC, where the two became teammates. Reina vividly remembers her first day of training. She actually called her dad after, and raved about 1) how much she loved playing in Brazil, and 2) how incredible she thought Brena was. However, there is one crucial detail about their relationship at this point: they didn't speak the same language. Brena spoke only Portuguese, and Reina only English. But after some initial sparks flew, they began chatting in-person by using Google Translate on their phones, translating texts and messaging constantly, and finally, stringing together some basic sentences on their own. Slowly but surely, Brena taught Reina Portuguese. They spent much of that first year together walking on the beach in Santos, trying out new restaurants, visiting Brena's family in Rio, and doing what they love most together: playing soccer. Brena also came to visit Reina's family in California during their off-season, and quickly became the Bontas' new favorite daughter. Fast-forward to the following year, where Brena ended up transferring to Santos' rival club, Palmeiras. Because they were on different teams now, Brena and Reina lived about two and a half hours apart from each other. Famously, they would take turns - making the long drive to see the other for just a few precious hours, grabbing dinner at their favorite restaurant or going on a walk with the dogs, before leaving in the early hours of the morning to make it back to their own respective cities in time for training. Somewhere along the road, it became very clear that if they were willing to find their way around these obstacles -- language, cultural differences, and now, distance -- that we were ready to take the next step towards forever together. Brena proposed to Reina in an unforgettable quiet mountain cabin in Brazil. She was so nervous that she, flustered, threw the ring box across the room after she had taken the ring out to propose. Reina proposed back to Brena at sunset during a beautiful evening picnic on the beach in Cancún, after a week of swimming in underground caves, zip lining, and celebrating New Year's Eve under a sky of fireworks. They couldn't wait to officialize things, so had their "court" wedding in an intimate ceremony in Alameda with Reina's family in early January of this year and Reina's mom officiating. And now, Brena and Reina are ready to officially celebrate with you all, back where it all began, in Brazil!
