Many might not know this, but Helena graduated from the University of New Mexico in 2021. Her degree has concentrations in both Sociology and Anthropology. UNM has one of the best Anthropology departments in the country and she is a proud alumnus of this prestigious department. Located on the main campus, this museum is truly amazing. I highly recommend giving it a look.
What we here in Albuquerque call "Old Town" started out as a farming community, turned outpost. It officially became a village in 1706. The buildings in Old Town are historic, with each having their own rich history. There are curio shops, and galleries, salons, haunted/ghost tours, 'Breaking Bad' tours, street musicians and Native American jewelry artists. This is an area where you can shop and soak in a lot of Albuquerque's unique and historic culture.
This is a market located in the old sawmill district within walking distance of Old Town and the Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town. It houses 27 individual local merchants, as well as a brewpub, cocktail and wine bar. It has become a popular hub for the 'hipster' in all of us.
Located just east of Old Town, is the Albuquerque Museum. Stop in and enjoy learning about the rich and vibrant history of our hometown. Fun side-note: Reggie and I had our second date at the Albuquerque Museum, near the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were enjoying it so much, We didn’t realize they had closed and we were the only ones still there! We got kicked out by security! We're rebels that way.
Also located within walking distance from Old Town and the Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town, is the Natural History Museum. A great experience for kids and the young-at-heart alike. Enjoy learning about our Earth's history. From dinosaurs, to humans, this museum lets you learn about it all. Check out the Dynamax theater offerings. Super cool!
If you’re looking for a fun, hands-on experience, Explora is a great place for the whole family. Learn about science, while interacting with over 259 exhibits! Covering science, engineering, technology, math and art. Don’t worry you’ll have so much fun you’ll forget you're learning at the same time.
Just a short drive from the Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town and historic Old Town. Is the Albuquerque Zoo. This is my favorite place in all of Albuquerque. As a teenager, I spent hundreds of hours volunteering here, teaching the public about conservation efforts and the animals who live at our zoo. I even became a docent for a short while after high school. I may be patrial, but I think it is not just a great place to take the whole family, but truly one of the best zoos in the country.
If you’re looking for something to do outside of the downtown area, The Balloon Museum is a wonderful place to visit. Our small town hosts the largest hot air balloon fiesta in the world, every October. We even hold the Guinness World Book Record!! This museum gives the history of not just the International Balloon Fiesta, but also the history of hot air ballooning from the early days to present day.
Santa Fe is New Mexico's capital city. Santa Fe is home to the round-house where our state legislative body gathers and the famous plaza. There you'll find the world's oldest Catholic church, the spiral stairway at Santa Fe's Loretto Chapel that miraculously stands, despite having no discernable means of support, and lots of amazing restaurants, shops and galleries. Santa Fe is home to the Georgia O'Keefe museum, the Folk Art Museum, and Meow Wolf, There is a train that runs from Albuquerque to Santa Fe. It is called the Rail Runner. Guess what?? Reggie has been a conductor on the Rail Runner for nearly three years. It's a fun ride!
