Downtown Jackson has a variety of boutique shops with a Western flair. Shops range from crappy trinkets (think: beach shops with 4 for $10 towels…except here it’s fleeces & cowboy hats) to high end household goods (eg – beautifully framed original prints, sculpted iron bookends). JH Mountain Resort doesn’t have much shopping…unless you forget your goggles, ski gloves, or GoPro.
Get pulled around by a bunch of Alaskan sled racing dogs. You’ll learn commands, too, which will be useful during the zombie apocalypse. Ask for Kiana (office manager & guide!) Cost: $290/pp + gratuity (half-day) ---Half-day (8am – 130pm, lunch included (10 mi round trip with fire to cook lunch & chill with the dogs)) --Full-day (12-hrs) gets you to the hot springs for a dip
The tram ‘whisks you up’ 4,100 ft to the summit. They sell waffles at the top (which is at 10,450 ft). Before you go – check out the live feed (to ensure the summit isn’t in the clouds…that’d be a waste of $$) Cost: $36 Times: 10am – 3pm
Guided tours are available via snowcoach (pictured), and include transportation to/from the hotel, breakfast, and lunch. See the Old Faithful Geyser, Moose Falls, Lewis Canyon, Lewis Falls, and West Thumb Geyser Basin Vendor: Scenic Safaris Cost: Varies (~$275/pp) Duration: 12 hours
Breweries like Snake River Brewing and Roadhouse Tap Room have a great selection of custom brews. You know how New York pizza is special because of the water they use? Same here. Jackson Hole breweries are consistently winning awards. Ku-ku-ka-choooo! Locations: Near ‘Snow King’ (SRB) & downtown Jackson (RT)
Located in the JH Mountain Resort area, Alpenhof is one of the original (Alpine-themed) ski lodges in Jackson Hole. On select nights, enjoy a German oompa-loompa band (one of our favs last time). The Mangy Moose is a 5-minute walk, and a local hangout catering to folks who couldn’t keep doing runs down the mountain.
Who doesn’t like a sleigh ride? Folks who didn’t bring blankets and gloves, that’s who. There are at least two sleigh options in Jackson. First option is to head to the Elk Refuge, and for $25/pp you can see elk doing elk things. You might see bison and a moose, but not guaranteed. The refuge is open 9-5. Another option is to head to the Spring Creek Ranch. They offer rides at 1pm, 2:45pm, 4:30pm and 5:30pm ($54/pp, more intimate setting).
Who looks at this word and automatically thinks it is pronounced the same was as Mobile, Alabama. All of you New Yorkers, that’s who! If interested in snowmobiling, recommend one snowmobile per two people…and only doing a half-day. Why? Baby, it’s cold outside. Scenic Safaris has a ‘Classic Half-Day Tour’ ($260-$325 per driver, $200-315 per rider) where you’ll be out the door at 7am and on the trail by 930am. You’ll be back for a nap by 1230pm. This same company offers full-day tours (eg – 18 miles to/from Old Faithful) and there are other tour companies that offer other options.
FREE stargazing is available every clear Friday night from 930 – 1159pm. In downtown Jackson, at The Center for the Arts, educators come equipped with large aperture telescope to show you planets, stars, galaxies, etc. They also bring iPads…to help you learn the constellations. Up-to-date info is available at the event site or by calling 1-844-WYO-STAR. During our event will be a New Moon…which means it will be DARK! Unfortunately, none of the premier ($15) events will be happening between 2/23 and 3/24. What’s great about those is that they require a drive to get out of the town’s light pollution (a drive thru the Teton Pass to the Stilson Parking Lot (corner of Hwy 22 & Moose-Wilson Rd)). Y’all can save that for next trip to Jackson as we know you will be back :)
