Bekah here: "We first met at our company's summer party in August 2016. At the time, Derek had been with WillowTree for 5 years and was working at our office in Durham, NC, and I had just started as a Designer in Charlottesville, VA. Derek sat down to introduce himself to me, and because I'd never seen him before, I just assumed he was new to the company, so I asked if he was an intern. Everyone started laughing, and told me that Derek basically ran our Durham office, but luckily, he took it as a compliment. To make things worse, after a few more minutes of chit-chat, I spilled an entire glass of red sangria all over him (and he was wearing khaki shorts!). Now even more embarrassed, I excused myself, and went the next year thinking he probably hated me. When he eventually moved back to Charlottesville in August of 2017, we spent more time together at work and I realized he wasn't holding a grudge against me from that day a year ago. We finally sparked a Halloween romance!"
Derek says: "The only requirement Bekah laid out for the proposal was that it had to be a surprise, so I knew I couldn't do anything that would give it away like a scavenger hunt. Our second date was at the Albemarle Apple Harvest Festival, and we planned to go again in 2018, so I had the perfect opportunity for a fall proposal. I made a fake e-vite for a friend's potluck and suggested we bake an apple crisp to bring along. Then I cored out the bottom of a fake apple, turning it into a ring holder, and snuck it into the bag of apples we bought at the Harvest Festival. When we got home, I convinced Bekah to peel the apples, and as she took the apples out of the bag, I got down on one knee behind her. When she got to the fake apple, which was much lighter than a real apple, she turned it over and the ring was staring her in the face!"
