Two months before Rebecca left Kenya “for good” in April 2018, we met at our mutual friends’ leaving party. Over two meals together, we connected over our faith, business, and growing up in Africa (DRC and Cameroon). We were disappointed that this acquaintance would be ending so soon, since Rebecca was leaving to start an MBA in France. However, oceans did not prove an insurmountable obstacle. Our friendship continued to blossom as we exchanged ideas, interests, and opinions discussing articles over text and practicing French in long conversations in the months that followed. From January 2019, we decided to try long-distance dating between Kenya and France. Our conversations turned to the experiences and values that have shaped our lives and the hopes and dreams we have for the future. Summer break during business school allowed Rebecca to visit Nairobi so that we could date in person and decide if we should continue to be together. We shared a meaningful couple of months together, which ended with a commitment to keep investing in our relationship and moving toward marriage. Rebecca returned to France to wrap up her MBA. Toukam flew to Singapore to celebrate her graduation in December 2019. He asked her parents for permission, found a beautiful ring, and planned to propose. After a couple of thwarted proposal plans, Toukam asked Rebecca to marry him after a long, heartfelt conversation in our hotel in Singapore. And she said yes! We look forward to celebrating our wedding with you virtually from Hemingways Nairobi, Kenya on 27 June 2020 and beginning our married life based in this beautiful country!
