We met in August of 2013. Phil was my neighbor. We met at our neighbor’s party. At the time, I was actually in a fight with my roommate. Phil’s room mate kept coming over to visit our house afterwards and would invite Phil along. He was quiet, respectable, and always smiling. I enjoyed being around his collected and calm demeanor. One day, I made butternut squash soup and brought bowls out to everyone. Phil just happen to be sitting next to the only open seat, and he started guessing what ingredients I put in the soup. That was the moment I realized he was something special. A couple of weeks later, there was a small visiting musical duo and they were having a concert in the back yard of our neighbor. They had a daughter named Araya, and she was playing with Phil in the back yard. He got up to leave after a few hours, and something inside me told me I wanted to go where ever he did. We spent the rest of the evening talking on his back porch. Shortly thereafter, I went to Europe with my mom. Phil took me and picked me up from the airport. When I got back, he was helping me with interview questions as practice, and he boldly said I have one that’s not on this sheet. Is this a thing? I said yes. Since then, he has always been supportive, fun, and has always kept my life interesting. If it wasn’t for this man, I would still be a wreck from my father’s passing. He has helped me grow in so many ways. He’s my best friend, and the person who makes me believe in myself. I can’t imagine living the rest of my life with anyone else. He completes me in many ways. I’m very fortunate to be such a lucky girl.
