Just a 45-minute drive from La Devèze (an Uber will cost approximately €65 one-way), Nîmes is a charming city steeped in Roman history. We recommend spending a leisurely afternoon exploring: The Roman Arena – One of the best-preserved amphitheatres in the world. Les Jardins de la Fontaine – A serene escape with fountains, ancient ruins and terraced gardens. Maison Carrée – A beautifully preserved Roman temple right in the city centre. Les Halles de Nîmes – The city’s vibrant covered food market, where you can sample local cheeses, olives, pastries and fresh produce — perfect for a midday bite or picnic supplies. And when hunger calls, head to Pinocchio Restaurant for delicious pizza and what we both agree is a 10/10 Aperol Spritz.
If you’re extending your trip, hop on a train from Nîmes to Montpellier, a short 56-minute ride away. This vibrant university city offers: Place de la Comédie – The heart of Montpellier, perfect for people-watching, coffee sipping, and soaking up the atmosphere. Jardin des Plantes – France’s oldest botanical garden. On our last visit, we stumbled upon a chorus of frogs singing in the shade! The Triumphal Arch & Promenade du Peyrou – Take in grand architecture and sweeping views. Shopping & Dining – From local markets to designer shops, you’ll find plenty to explore and eat.
Just a 6-minute drive or a 24-minute walk from La Devèze, Quissac is our picturesque local village nestled along the Vidourle River. It’s perfect for a quiet wander, expect scenic walks, charming stone architecture, and the relaxed pace of French village life. A lovely place to stop for a coffee at a local café or simply soak up the sun by the riverside.
