If you asked either of us, "Did you ever think you'd end up together?" the answer would likely be, "No." Delhi and Colorado are worlds apart—differing in geography, population density, infrastructure, culture, education, cost of living, and core values. Here are a few examples of how our environments shaped us differently. Delhi is located in Northern India. It is flat, urbanized, and densely populated with 35 million people. Compared to Delhi, the city of Littleton is the size of an Ant with a measly population of 48,000. Rochelle found the lack of traffic nice, but the quietness, combined with the absence of bustling city streets seemed a bit “underwhelming” at first. Fortunately, she is now very enthralled with the natural beauty of Colorado. Technically, Delhi has 4 distinct seasons. However, if you ask Rochelle about the weather, only one word would come from her mouth…hot. If you go on to ask Rochelle how hot, you will need to do some quick math in your head due to the use of the Metric system in India. This has certainly sparked “heated” debates between the two of us, although now we both know how to convert temperatures between Celsius and Fahrenheit. Chris still prefers to simply “let the phone do it”. There is nothing Coloradans love more than physical activity. There is nothing Indians love more than food. In India’s fast-paced society, rooted deeply in tradition, family and work come before everything else. The geographical limitations of a sprawling megacity like Delhi make many of the activities Americans are fortunate enough to enjoy simply not possible in such an environment. As a result, outside of life’s mandatory routines, there is often little time for hobbies or leisure activities. However, there is always time for food and cooking—both of which shape the lives of Indians in a truly authentic and meaningful way. As a result of this, Indian food is cooked every week, usually around twice. This means many dishes are brand new for Christopher, which he enjoys making American names for to compensate for his lack of annunciation skills. This also means many activities are new for Rochelle. New activities include video games, puzzles, bowling, axe throwing, camping, pumpkin carving, easter egg dyeing, tennis, plays, symphonies, and swimming! We both love watching the reactions of each other as we try new things together! 80% of the population in India follows Hinduism, 14% follows Islam, and only 2% follow Christianity. This massive difference in religious composition inherently influences the Value systems in India. This shapes everything from relationships and community, to laws, politics, gender roles, and ethics. Rochelle is part of the 2%, raised by her parents to be a devout follower of Jesus Christ. On the day that we met each other this shared foundation enabled us to develop a deep and meaningful connection, breaking through any cultural differences immediately. Through our faith, we find common purpose, values, and love that defines how we care for one another. No matter how far apart we were born, or how differently we were brought up, our religion and value system undoubtedly connects us more than anything else ever could.
