Our story does not begin with love at first sight, but rather exemplifies why you should never judge a book by its cover. When we met in the fall of 2012, we were on opposite trajectories in life; Linnea was working three jobs and trying to get into PA school, which necessitated taking a night class in anatomy and physiology. Linnea had already graduated from Creighton University with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, and was working as a phlebotomist, a medical assistant, and a whitewater raft guide. Andrew, however, was pursuing a full time career in ski bumming and obviously still enjoying the freedom from shaving and haircuts he had earned two years earlier when he left the Marines. He had decided to take an anatomy and physiology course in conjunction with an EMT course, and the fact that it was a night class meant it didn't interfere too much with his sleep schedule (only sleeping through class on occasion). Yeah, at first glance, you wouldn't think these two people would end up falling in love and getting married. So, by chance, we sat next to each other for a semester, being put in the same lab groups, forcing Linnea to engage the mountain bum in conversation. Linnea's quick wit, sense of humor, and intelligence quickly caught Andrew's attention. Linnea noticed how easy school was for Andrew, and was both envious of and intrigued by his intelligence, but not romantically interested. So, when Andrew finally asked her out, Linnea was completely blindsided, but she took a chance and said yes. Within months Andrew showed Linnea that she had underestimated him; he was sweet, kind, and worked hard to show her he was worth her time. We built the foundations of a relationship that would weather 5 years of distance, multiple cross-country moves, demanding school schedules, family tragedies, and new careers. Our love has also taken us around the world, built new friendships, and begun a story that might never have been if we had only judged our book by its cover.
