How We Met

College sweethearts

On a hot summer day at college, Raquel was in the library doing homework. Jacob, wanting to study for the midterms, walked into the library (for the first time since he started school) and started to look for an open desk in the very crowded 2nd floor. After walking around for a few minutes he finally saw a spot opened and rushed to get it before anyone else take it. He put down his books and asked the girl at the next desk over to keep an eye on his things while he used the men’s room. This girl was Raquel. When he returned, he introduced himself and they started having one of the many conversations they would have in their life.

The Engagement

After almost 7 years of dating, on a regular Wednesday evening, Jacob told Raquel that a client who was seeking to earn their business was taking him and his partner Brandon, out on a boat ride that Saturday. Raquel had been sick for a few days and although she was sad that the invite did not include her, she was excited about their growing business. Raquel and Jacob had been talking about taking the next step for a few months and even though she did not know when it would happen, she had a feeling that the time was close. On Friday, Jacob told Raquel that the daughter of their client had gotten very sick and was in the hospital. Therefore, he wasn't going to make it to the outing. Since the boat had already been reserved and fully paid for, he offered it to Jacob and Brandon to use. Brandon backed out too as his fiancé had already made plans for them to see venues. Raquel got immediately excited about the idea of a nice boat ride and started asking her friends and family to joined them. Coincidentally, none of them were available either, and although it seem weird for a second, she didn't give it much thought and made up her mind that it would only be the two of them the next day. The morning of the proposal Jacob woke Raquel up to start getting ready. Even though she still felt very sick, she was not willing to pass on going out on a perfect sunny winter day. Jacob dressed nicely but Raquel was just thinking about something easy to take off to tan in the boat. After chartering out on Biscayne Bay in Miami, the co-captain and trainee turned out to be a photographer and a violinist who started playing “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. It was in that moment when Raquel realized what was happening, her cold was magically gone and her hands started shaking as Jacob got in one knee to asked her to love him forever. When they returned to shore, Raquel was surprised again to see that her family and friends were all waiting for them to celebrate over brunch at Rusty Pelican.
