Their story begins on opposite ends of the country, where they would both grow into the women that the other was always searching for. Raquel grew up along the sun-soaked beaches of Florida. Betsy, meanwhile, was raised on the wide-open prairie of North Dakota. Nearly 2,000 miles stretched between them. By all accounts, their paths should never have crossed—the geography unhelpful, the odds unromantic. But the universe (with the help of a mutual friend and Taylor Swift), had other plans. They finally met in the summer of 2023, thanks to their friend Lindsay, who (correctly) thought they’d be a great pair. As fate (and Lindsay) would have it, Raquel was planning a trip to Denver for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which Betsy was also attending. Lindsay seized the moment with the skill of a romantic chessmaster, and arranged their introduction. Raquel flew out on July 11th, 2023, daydreaming about the “fun history teacher” she was about to meet, secretly hoping for at least a lil smooch as a souvenir. Betsy started her day with a hike in the mountains, where she spotted a hummingbird hovering over a stream. In Anishinaabe culture, hummingbirds are messengers of joyful news. At the time, she may not have realized it, but a message from the universe had arrived. After meeting, they quickly fell into easy conversation, talking about everything and anything as if making up for those missing 2,000 miles. Both were immediately smitten and didn’t want the moment to end. The night took them to a ping pong bar, an arcade, a punk rock party, and finally a long walk through City Park as the sky began to lighten, where they hands met for the first time while Taylor Swift's 'Enchanted' lulled in the background. The next few days were a whirlwind of stolen moments, laughter, conversations that made time feel elastic. Raquel even tried to change her flight just to stay longer. Before she left back to Orlando, they promised they were all in—letters, visits, late night calls, whatever it took. They were ready to take on a cross-country relationship because they knew this was something extraordinary. For a year, love letters crossed states, late night calls stretched into morning, and monthly visits felt like small vacations of the heart. Eventually, the plan formed: after Raquel finished the school year, she would move to Denver to be with Betsy. In June 2024, they packed up Raquel’s belongings and her cats, and drove 1,700 miles from Florida to Colorado, knowing it was just the beginning of forever. Since that first summer, their love has only deepened. Every day feels brighter, every moment sweeter. Even ordinary routines felt extraordinary together, and every adventure, meal, laugh, and gathering with friends and family became better simply because they had each other. In the summer of 2025, they traveled to Italy with friends, each secretly carrying an engagement ring. In Venice, amid morning light and gentle water, Betsy led Raquel to Libreria Acqua Alta, one of Europe’s oldest bookstores. Surrounded by ancient towering books, Betsy dropped to one knee and asked Raquel to spend forever together. Raquel said yes with her whole heart. That evening, under the stars in a garden over wine with friends, Raquel returned the gesture and proposed to Betsy, who said yes all over again. Now, they are thrilled to have you here to celebrate. Their story isn’t complete without their closest friends and family dancing and celebrating as they begin the next chapter together.
