Have lunch at Hap’s Grill on Main St. This cash only/to-go only hole in the wall is arguably Salisbury’s most famous and beloved restaurant. Don’t be deterred by the line that begins forming around 11:30am. The staff are efficient and as you wait, enjoy some conversation and the delicious smells. Randy’s standard menu order at Hap’s is a cheeseburger and hotdog “all the way” with a bottle of Cheerwine. (In case you didn’t know, Cheerwine was invented in Salisbury and is made there to this day!) Enjoy your meal in the courtyard at St Luke’s Episcopal Church (parish founded in 1753, church constructed in 1828).
Open at 6am for breakfast, but... Don't miss the barbecue, which for a North Carolinian, is synonymous with pulled pork. Randy’s favorite location for a pulled pork sandwich is Hendrix Barbecue (the dip is to die for). However, some local’s claim the Smoke Pit is the new leader in excellent smoked meats. Of course every lunch should be accompanied by Cheerwine. If you're lucky, you might get some crushed ice with your beverage.

Hike up Dunn’s Mountain to get some geological history of the region and find some views of the expansive Carolina piedmont. If you scan the horizon you can find Charlotte’s downtown glittering in the distance. On the drive back to town make a quick stop at the “Old Stone House” constructed by German immigrant Michael Braun in 1766! “This two-story Georgian-style house is the oldest structure in Rowan County”
The NC Transportation Museum is another local highlight. This museum is located in the historic Spencer Shops which were the rail yard headquarters for the famous Southern Railway. Be enchanted by the steel and the colors, the power and the beauty, the romance of the railroad! YEEEEHAW! Other modes of transportation are highlighted as well.
Take a 25 minute drive north of town to Boone’s Cave Park. Here you can pay your respects to the mighty Yadkin river and see a cave supposed to be a hideout for the famous American pioneer Daniel Boone.
