It doesn't matter where you stay, there is plenty to do. Downtown St. Pete has so much to offer, from locally owned shops, restaurants, museums, and bars. Everything in walking distance or a short Uber ride. The beach is only 15 minutes away and the trolley can take you there if you choose to forego a car.
