Amster-what? Visit Rotterdam! The city where we are getting married is Europe's largest port, and has a rich maritime history. It was no fluke that Rotterdam was number 5 in The Lonely Planet's top 10 cities to visit of 2016! Among the many sites to visit, don't miss the Markthal, SS Rotterdam, Cube Houses and the Beurs Traverse! And you're in luck: on 6, 7 and 8 september the World Port Days take place in Rotterdam: "Spectacular demonstrations on the water, impressive ships and exciting port excursions."
This lovely city was the home of the famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer and is the subject of a number of his paintings. Known for the 'Delft Blue' pottery, numerous historic buildings, and quaint bridges, it is picturesque like no other. Delft is a short train ride away from Rotterdam, and a perfect choice if you have a few hours to explore.
Ok, fine, Amsterdam is pretty cool as well. It's the most famous city in the Netherlands, with scenic canals and art work of the greats such as Vermeer, Van Gogh, and Rembrandt. It's the city with the most expats, and many English speaking venues. Plan to spend a day in this grand city, but watch out for the bikes!
The Hague (Dutch: Den Haag) is the 3rd biggest city of The Netherlands, and the seat of the the Dutch government. It's also the city where the Royal family usually resides, and of course where the International Court of Justice is located. The Hague is very close to Rotterdam, so check out the historic Binnenhof (government buildings), the Peace Palace and the paintings of Rembrandt and Vermeer in the Maurits Huis.
If you have the time, visit the neighbouring country of Belgium, particularly the UNESCO world heritage city of Bruges (Dutch: Brugge), one of the quintessential medieval, European cities. Enjoy the many historic buildings (many over 500 years old), cobbled streets, ancient churches, and more importantly - the fine chocolates! Plan on spending an entire day here if you have an early start. From Rotterdam, Bruges is about 3 hours by train or two hours by car.
Paris is a city that needs no introduction. A mere 4 1/2 hours by drive from Rotterdam, or only 3 1/2 hours by train (the futuristic Thalys train), the 'City of Light' is a must-visit whether you love to shop 'til you drop, visit museums and galleries, admire its iconic buildings, catch a cabaret, or enjoy some fantastic French cuisine. Plan to spend a minimum of 2 days here - you will never want to leave!
Why not go see London Bridge, the Big Ben, or The Queen and her corgis? A trip to London is easily done, flights from Schiphol leave multiple times a day, and tickets are usually cheap. There's also the option to visit by trains departing from Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Beware, the U.K. is NOT part of the Schengen visa, so you might need to get some additional paperwork done.
Although we think the Netherlands will have plenty to keep you occupied, a lot of European cities are relatively easy and cheap to visit.
