The Meeting

Rahul and Tara first met in San Francisco in 2015 as part of a conspiracy authored by Rahul's cousin and Tara's friend, Aarti Reddy. Aarti was convinced they were a perfect match, and when Rahul planned a trip to the Bay Area with one of his closest friends, James Yi, she set her plan into motion. The group spent the next few days eating, drinking, and exploring the city. Upon the conclusion of the trip, James bluntly (and wisely) stated to Rahul, "You need to marry that girl!" Though they each felt drawn to the other, due to their circumstances at the time (Rahul planning a move to Chicago for fellowship and Tara pursing a new job opportunity), it would be another 18 months before they met again... New Year's Eve 2016. Rahul had once again come to the Bay Area to visit Aarti, and "coincidentally" they met up with Tara for a drink. From there, they began to text and talk on the phone regularly, which subsequently turned into visiting each other. During one such visit to San Francisco, Rahul asked Tara to be his girlfriend over dessert at a place he'd rather not acknowledge (Cheesecake Factory, haha). She calmly said yes, and then went home to her roommate Sakthi where she began repeatedly yelling, "Rahul! Boyfriend! Cheesecake Factory!"

The Proposal

Rahul plotted to propose to Tara during a planned vacation to Paris and Barcelona. But how to keep it a surprise for her? He came up with the brilliant plan to tell Tara that he was too busy to get a ring before the trip (literally the worst excuse ever, but for some reason she bought it). Off they went, and on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, in Barcelona, Spain, near La Caja Magica (The Magic Fountain) and in front of the Museu Nacional d' Art de Catalunya (The National Art Museum of Catalonia), he popped the question in what looks like the most staged picture of all time (see top of this page). Tara stood with her mouth agape in utter shock, then grabbed the ring and put it on her own finger! After kneeling for what felt like an eternity waiting for a reply, Rahul replied, "Ummm, I think you're supposed to say yes." She nodded yes, but the first words that escaped her lips were "Did you insure this?" (of course he had, he was planning to marry an insurance lawyer). Tara moved to Chicago a few months later, and the rest, as they say, is history...
