I have to start with my favorite place on Earth: the Galápagos Islands. If you love nature, wildlife, snorkeling, scuba diving, insane seafood or enjoy cocktails with a dreamy landscape, this is the destination for you. The Galápagos are a volcanic archipelago with 13 major islands, 7 smaller ones, and over 100 islets. Located 1,000 kilometers off Ecuador’s coast, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. What to Expect: Wildlife: Giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and more. Marine Life: Snorkel or dive with sea turtles, sharks, and rays. Landscapes: Explore volcanic terrains, lava fields, and lush highlands. Important: Flights: From Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra (Santa Cruz) or San Cristóbal. Park Entry Fee: $200 per person. My favorite islands are Santa Cruz, Isabela, and San Cristóbal. If you’re considering this trip, ask me for more info about the different islands! 🐢 Recommended Stay: 5-6 days
Switching from beaches to mountains... Cuenca is perfect for a shorter adventure. This picturesque city in the southern Andes can be reached from Guayaquil by car (3-4 hours) or a quick 45-minute flight. Known for its charming colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, and rich gastronomy, Cuenca offers a tranquil escape. Be sure to try traditional dishes like mote pillo and hornado. You can venture to El Cajas National Park, known for its high-altitude lakes and stunning scenery. Recommended Stay: 2 days to fully enjoy the city and nearby natural attractions.
Nestled in the Andes, Quito is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its beautifully preserved colonial architecture and vibrant culture. Perfect for a 2-3 day visit, it’s also a convenient hub for international flights. Only 45min flight from Guayaquil. Wander the historic center with landmarks like La Compañía de Jesús, Basilica del Voto Nacional, and Plaza Grande. Visit the Mitad del Mundo to stand on the equatorial line, and enjoy breathtaking views from El Panecillo or the TelefériQo, which leads to hikes on Volcán Pichincha. Nearby, explore Mindo, a lush cloud forest perfect for birdwatching and ziplining, or Otavalo, home to Ecuador’s most famous artisan market with vibrant textiles and crafts. Having spent my childhood in Quito, I’m happy to share personalized tips—there are so many BEAUTIFUL places to discover.
Just 50 km south of Quito, Cotopaxi is one of Ecuador’s most stunning snow-capped volcanoes, perfect for mountain lovers and adventurers. Visitors can hike to the José Rivas Refuge at 4,800 meters or enjoy scenic trails with breathtaking views of páramos and wildlife like wild horses and condors. For more adventure, try cycling down the volcano. Recommended Stay: A day trip from Quito is possible, but staying overnight at a nearby lodge offers a more relaxing experience. P.S. Cotopaxi is more accessible than Chimborazo, Ecuador’s tallest volcano and the closest point to the sun. While slightly farther from Quito, Chimborazo’s majesty is undeniable and worth the extra effort for those seeking an even greater adventure.
And last but not least...for my extreme adventurers, the Amazon is calling. Ecuador’s rainforest is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, filled with rivers, wildlife, and endless thrills. You can get there with a 30-minute flight from Quito to Coca or Lago Agrio. What to expect: River Tours: Spot pink dolphins, monkeys, and caimans. Wildlife Watching: See toucans, sloths, and more. Adventures: Hike trails, swim in waterfalls, or go tubing. Culture: Visit indigenous communities and learn their traditions. Recommended Stay: 3-4 days at an eco-lodge. And who knows—you might just bump into Shawn Mendes while you’re there😂
