It was Welcome Weekend for the freshman at Gustavus Adolphus College, 2016. During this time there were many activities for freshmen, such as a hypnotist, the square dance, and then the neon dance, where our story officially begins. Rachel: I hadn't planned on attending the neon dance originally. My friends and I were hanging out at a house party when the police showed up. We ended up hiding in the shower and later made a quick exit through the window. After that, we went our separate ways—my friends to another house party and myself to the neon dance with another friend. True to the theme, I showed up in my only neon attire: neon yellow spandex. Interestingly, I didn't even notice him at the dance; my attention was on someone else! It wasn't until later, back at the dorms, that I received a friend request on Facebook… Mitch: I am usually not one for going to parties and events especially when I only know a couple of people, so this was unique for me to want to go to what felt like a high school dance party. I ended up going with my freshman year roommate, our friends from right next door, and a couple other people from our section 2C. We get to the dance a little while after it started and get right in the middle of the large group dancing to the music. Since this was a neon dance, everyone had on varying outfits incorporating neon. Next thing I know, I see this blonde girl, wearing bright neon spandex up at the front dancing with her friends. She was occasionally looking in our general direction, but I figured she was just looking around to see if she saw anyone she knew. I went through the end of the dance trying to get the courage to talk to this girl but of course, I chickened out, and we ended up leaving before the dance ended. While I lay awake thinking about how I could find this girl, I REMEMBERED SOMETHING AMAZING, WE HAD A CLASS OF 2020 FACEBOOK GROUP! I started searching the group for the girl from the neon dance. 30 mins later I found her and I messaged her “Hey”. Greatest pickup line ever if you ask me.
