It was the Saturday after St. Patrick's Day and just a little over a month before graduation in 2016. The Riv, a popular bar in East Lansing, typically hosted "Burgerama" (Rama) every Thursday. For those that have never experienced Rama, let's just say "it's an experience" full of sports jerseys, early 2000s music, flip cup, quarters, $4.25 pitchers of Coors Light, and $2.50 burgers and fries starting every Thursday at 10:00 AM. For the first time, Rama was moved to Saturday so it wouldn't be overshadowed by Thursday's St. Patty's Day celebrations. Coincidentally, the Coors Light reps were in town because The Riv had recently been named the top selling Coors Light account in the country. Sohail was in town visiting friends, and Rachel headed to Rama with hers. Towards the end of the afternoon, the lines were long, and Rachel and Sohail were standing in line waiting for their turn to buy a round. They started talking, and the rest is history. -- After exchanging numbers, we quickly realized we had more in common than just our love for spending Saturday afternoons in the bar. We can't wait to share a little piece of our Rama love story with everyone on May 7th!
From a fake email with "free tickets" to LondonHouse's holiday popup bar and real-time MSU football game update texts to almost-missed nail appointments and a made-up birthday dinner reservation, Sohail pulled out all the stops to convince Rachel there was no way they were getting engaged the weekend of December 12th. Sohail headed out "to the gym" (aka to meet his family at his apartment) and came over about an hour before they needed to leave to "meet his brother and girlfriend at LondonHouse for drinks." Rachel still hadn't even started getting ready (surprise, surprise) and the clock was ticking. With five minutes to spare, they hopped in an Uber and arrived at LondonHouse right on time - 2:00. They headed up to the rooftop and were taken to a different elevator than normal "because of COVID restrictions" (again, right over Rachel's head). When the elevator doors opened to the Cupola, there was an archway setup, rose petals on the ground, and a bottle of Veuve on the table. That's when Rachel knew exactly what was going on. Sohail walked Rachel to the Cupola, and spoke about their relationship and the future while Rachel constantly interrupted with, "Are you kidding me?" Then, he popped the question, and without hesitation, Rachel said, "Yes!" Little did Rachel know, there was another surprise in store. After 20 minutes of soaking it all in and taking photos, both families came up to the rooftop to celebrate. We took more photos, cried more happy tears, and headed back to the house to find yet another surprise - the living room setup for a party. ... and that's where we kicked off our 18 month engagement!
