Rachel and Mason had an English class together during their first year of college but officially met at a social between Alpha Sigma Phi and Delta Zeta. Rachel was sober crew and was starting to walk home when the party was over. Mason was sitting on the porch and called out to ask if she wanted someone to walk her home. Initially, Rachel declined, but eventually did ask Mason to walk her home. Once they got back to their dorms, they sat on a bench outside and talked for over an hour about science and medicine. They exchanged numbers and began dating two weeks later.

In December of 2018, Rachel and Mason took a trip to Walt Disney World to celebrate finishing their semester. After asking Rachel's dad for his blessing to propose, Mason bought and hid the ring in his luggage for the trip. On their final day, after eating breakfast at the Crystal Palace, Mason asked to get some photos in front of the castle at the Magic Kingdom. Rachel thought something was up because anyone who knows Mason knows how much he hates getting his picture taken. While the photographer was taking the photos, Mason got down on one knee and asked Rachel to marry him. She, of course, said yes!
